    2006 November 16: APM Terminals Jamaica, which operates the Kingston Container Terminal, will impose a penalty of USD100 on clients who fail to collect containers after making an appointment if they fail to make a new request within 72 hours.

    The new measure became effective on Monday November 13.

    According to a local news report, APM Jamaica said it receives client instructions to move about 540 containers per day but only 40% of those boxes are cleared each day as clients fail to meet their appointments.

    APM introduced the appointment system on July 10. At the time, the expectation was that 250 containers would be moved out of the Terminal daily. Client demand soon grew to 540 requests. Equipment would therefore be assigned to move containers to the interchange area on request but when clients did not keep their appointment, APM found that it had a new problem. Equipment that could have been deployed otherwise for more productive work were tied up moving containers that ultimately were not collected at the appointed time.
